As you may know, this particular story written by Lewis Carroll has been adapted and re-interpreted so many time until the point that I feel like cursing this movie. But when Tim Burton's movie version of Alice in Wonderland was released, I had a feeling that the movie will be quite interesting and dark since it's directed by Tim Burton. the guy who brought you The Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands, Batman, Sweeney Todd, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and many more...
After watching this movie, I had mixed reviews about this movie. I can't fathom whether this movie is a great flick or just another visual fest with an empty plot....
What I like about this movie is the great visual effects. Burton really made a children's fairytale look like sort of a nightmare with the very dark and chilling setting. Besides that, Burton was also known for depicting very weird and kooky characters and Alice in Wonderland is full of them.....and who does he call to play one of his characters? Take a guess.....if you answered Johnny Depp and Burton's wife Helena Bonham-Carter, you got it right!
Johnny Depp never fails playing a weird character and the role of The Mad Hatter is crazy in every way. Bonham-Carter also did a good job playing the Red Queen. I think her performance worked because of her incredibly huge head. To add some star power is Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, a gentle but also weird character....
What worries me about this movie is that the storyline is a step back from the original but it seemed kinda lost, like when you tried to fill something up, a void will always bug you. The lead actress, Mia Wasowiska who plays Alice doesn't look convincing. At times, she looks kinda dull and boring...
Overall, this version of Alice in Wonderland isn't about Alice, but the strange characters from a strange place called Wonderland, or was it Underland....
My rating: 3.9/5 stars...Just to make things fair
Cheers,
-Tim-
